If you’re in the market for a new role, odds are you’ll be asked to participate in a virtual interview. Be sure to prepare in advance, so you show confidence and experience using this type of technology.
Implement these three tips to ace your next virtual job interview.
- Understand the Platform
Be sure to navigate the interviewer’s video conferencing platform well in advance of your meeting. Whether they use Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, or another platform, download the platform to your laptop or desktop, set up an account, and log in if needed. Find out how to use the video, microphone, volume, screen sharing, and other options. Choose an area of your home with a stable internet connection as your interview area. Ask to connect with a family member or friend to gain feedback on your audio and video quality. If the picture is grainy or you experience an echo, purchase a mini webcam with a microphone to attach to your computer. Practice with the technology again on the day of your interview to make sure everything is working. If you face glitches during the interview, relax, and solve the problem. The interviewer wants to see how you work under pressure.
- Minimize Distractions
Do what you can to reduce distractions during your interview. Choose a room with a window you can sit by so the interviewer can clearly see you. Or, find a blank wall to sit in front of to make yourself the focal point. Clean up your surroundings to show you pay attention to detail. Close the door and window to reduce noise. Turn off the television and your online notifications. Silence your cellphone. Remind your family members to keep pets in another part of the home and not disturb you during your interview. Be ready 10 minutes in advance so you can sit down and mentally prepare for the discussion.
- Dress Professionally
Choose attire that you’d wear for an in-person interview. This shows you’re a professional who’s serious about the role. Men might wear a button-down shirt, blazer, and chinos. Women might wear a blouse with dress pants or a skirt. Be sure to style your hair in a professional manner. If you wear makeup or jewelry, keep both to a minimum.
