At the start of my career one of my mentors gave me a crucial piece of advice on how to become truly successful that has become invaluable to me not only as a professional, but as a person. What was this bit of life-changing advice, you ask?
Get involved in volunteer work.
We all know that getting involved in your community and giving back is great for personal development. It can relieve things like stress and anxiety and help to put things into perspective. Community service directly contributes to a better future for those who are less fortunate and that makes you feel good! There are countless positives that come from donating your time and efforts into community outreach, just as there are a multitude of ways for someone to become involved.
Last year I discovered Catie’s Closet, a nonprofit out of Massachusetts that builds closets for underprivileged youths in low-income schools. They are always looking for new and gently used clothing as well as toiletries for ages pre-K – grade 12. I instantly fell in love with the idea of a child getting the chance to pick out an outfit that fits their personal style instead of being thrown a garbage bag of clothes that may or may not fit.
Being a kid has always been hard and acceptance from your peers is often about what you have, or what you have not, leaving children from low-income houses at a significant disadvantage. After learning about this organization, I hosted a Fill the Bus Clothing Drive last year and was amazed at the number of items we were able to collect with help from friends, family, colleagues, and clients!
This year, BANKW Staffing is joining the cause, and I am looking forward to an even bigger turnout! The drive runs from June 1 to June 30, and collection boxes will be located at each of our offices. Please reach out to learn how you and your company can participate and support Catie’s Closet.
Did you know that volunteering can also promote your business and personal brand?
Volunteering in the community is a great way for you to enhance both your company’s and your own values. While it is by no means the primary objective of volunteering, developing deep community ties can help boost your company’s reputation as a force of positive impact.
Also, when you’re involved in your community, you have an opportunity to add depth and greater meaning to typical client interactions by partnering on philanthropic projects or events that your organization may be supporting or hosting. These interactions can only enhance and accentuate the relationship you have with your client-base, creating greater charitable and business opportunities for the future.
Excited and ready to get involved? Below are a few pointers to get started in volunteer work:
- Utilize social media. What are people in your network doing to get involved? Ask them questions about their work and if there is an opportunity for you to join in.
- Brainstorm and research. Dig deep. What’s an area you feel strongly about supporting? For example, I’m passionate about helping and giving back to children.
- Start local. Nothing is better than seeing your work and donations have a direct impact on the community around you, plus it will be easier to connect with others in person when you are close by.
- Join or start a philanthropy committee at your organization. Sometimes two (or more) heads are better than one!
Once you have found your community involvement niche, tell others about it! Share it on social media, ask for help and encourage others to get involved! Reach out to your clients and customers to see if they would be interested in joining in. You will be surprised at just how many people will want to get involved and you will quickly begin to store away a mental folder of contacts you know to call first when it comes to volunteer and donation opportunities.
What’s great about this is that YOU will also be at the forefront of your client’s minds for volunteer and outreach opportunities, and you will now be one of their first calls when they are looking for help! Getting involved and donating time, resources, or funds is a great way to make a positive splash in your community and it feels great too!
